Growth strategies, emerging risks and evolving business models: Bruno Scaroni, CEO of Zurich Italy, joined participants of MIB Trieste School of Management's Executive Master in Insurance & Finance to discuss the challenges shaping the insurance industry.

How are major insurance groups adapting their strategies to emerging risks, financial market volatility and technological change?
And what capabilities are needed to navigate these developments and turn them into strategic decisions?
These were among the key questions explored by Bruno Scaroni, CEO of Zurich Italy, during a session with participants of the Executive Master in Insurance & Finance (EMIF), as part of a module focused on the evolution and transformation of the insurance industry. Changing risk profiles and growing protection needs are creating new opportunities across global insurance markets.

he expansion of Specialty insurance, in particular, reflects the increasing complexity of risks associated with infrastructure investment, technological developments, cybersecurity and the energy transition.
These areas demand increasingly advanced expertise and the ability to operate across international markets. Zurich's strategic choices provided a practical perspective on how global insurers are responding to these developments.

At the same time, recent macroeconomic developments have challenged traditional business models, prompting insurers to rethink their strategies. The Italian life insurance market offers a clear example: rapidly rising interest rates, the increased attractiveness of government bonds and changing household investment behaviour have reshaped market dynamics, contributing to higher surrender rates and significant strategic adjustments across the industry.

Against this backdrop, the experience of Zurich Investments Life provided a concrete example of business transformation, from a shift towards less capital-intensive (capital-light) products and a stronger focus on Protection to the growing importance of Zurich-branded distribution channels, process digitalisation and measures to strengthen financial resilience.

The discussion also addressed the role of artificial intelligence in the industry's evolution.
While recognising its potential, Scaroni emphasised the continued importance of human interaction, trust and personal relationships in serving customers.

Beyond market developments and corporate strategy, the exchange with participants offered an opportunity to reflect on leadership and managerial responsibility. Drawing on his professional experience, Scaroni highlighted the importance of listening, leading by example and remaining aware of the responsibilities that come with senior leadership positions.

Bringing together competencies, strategic thinking and real-world management experience is a defining feature of MIB's Executive Master in Insurance & Finance.
By engaging directly with industry leaders, experienced professionals gain a deeper understanding of business decision-making and broaden the perspectives they bring to their own career development.
