The Centre for Insurance Research "Ermanno Pitacco"

The Centre "Ermanno Pitacco"

The Centre for Insurance Research CIR "Ermanno Pitacco" is the expression of the MIB Trieste School of Management commitment to creating and spreading knowledge in the insurance-actuarial field.

The Centre, dedicated to the memory of Prof. Pitacco in recognition of his great contribution to actuarial studies in Italy and abroad, takes up the baton from the Demographic Laboratory - DemoLab, of which Prof. Pitacco was the founder and Director.

The information released by the CIR will be used by insurance companies to understand the markets and customers better and improve products and services, taking also advantage of comparisons with international best practices.
The CIR will also provide an independent and qualified voice in debates about the main insurance issues of general social value, such as insurance accessibility, financial education, distribution channels, and companies' CSR.
The Centre will produce research, periodic reports and insights and organize events and debates.

It will propose itself as a partner for private and public organizations to promote the sector's growth and innovation, increase its social contribution, and spread the insurance culture.

MIB Trieste is thankful to the Centre for Insurance Research Sponsors: Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A. and Allianz S.p.A.

Research Priorities

Building on the Legacy of DemoLab, the Centre will primarily address critical issues related to personal risks, with a particular emphasis on longevity and health-related challenges.

The Centre will engage in comprehensive analysis of risk dynamics and explore potential coverage mechanisms, particularly within the insurance sector, from both individual and managerial perspectives.
A thorough understanding of demographic trends, a structural component of economic and social systems, is essential to grasp the evolving nature of personal risks and the corresponding need for effective coverage solutions.

Current Research Priorities

  • Analysis of demographic trends, with a specific focus on total life expectancy and disability-free life expectancy.
  • Examination of structural dependency ratio trends at both the overall population level and within targeted sub-populations.
  • Exploration of innovative approaches to designing annuity products and benefits.
  • Comparative analysis of chronological and biological age in relation to the manifestation and management of longevity risks.
  • Development of sustainable solutions for managing individual longevity risks, ensuring long-term well-being and security.
