From technology to business: EMBAIN at RINA’s Open Innovation Hub
Three days inside RINA’s Open Innovation Hub in Rome gave participants of MIB Trieste School of Management’s Executive MBA in Business Innovation (EMBAIN) the opportunity to explore a key challenge for companies today: how to turn technological research into solutions that can reach the market, scale and create business value.

This is precisely the perspective at the heart of EMBAIN: developing managers and professionals who can connect technology, strategy and business.

At RINA’s Open Innovation Hub in Castel Romano, participants worked in an environment dedicated to applied research, experimentation and technology transfer.
RINA is one of the leading international groups in engineering, technology consulting, testing, inspection and certification, with over 7,000 professionals operating across 70 countries. With a strong industrial heritage and expertise spanning multiple strategic sectors, RINA plays a significant role in advancing technological innovation, supporting the energy transition and helping industries address complex engineering and transformation challenges.

From research to industrial application

During the three-day experience, participants explored the different stages of the innovation journey: from research and experimentation to technology validation, industrial applications and sustainable business models.
Training sessions and discussions with RINA experts were combined with visits to the Hub’s research and testing facilities, including the HYDRA demonstration plant, focused on the role of hydrogen in the decarbonisation of the steel industry, and laboratories dedicated to advanced materials.
Hydrogen provided a concrete case through which to address a broader managerial question:
What has to happen before a promising technology becomes an economically viable and industrially scalable solution?
Participants examined market dynamics, infrastructure requirements, technology maturity and industrial applications, connecting technical potential with the strategic decisions required to bring innovation to market.

Where technology meets management

The experience reflects one of the defining features of EMBAIN: approaching innovation not as an abstract concept, but as a process in which technology, business models, organisational change and strategic decision-making need to work together.
The three days at RINA concluded by reconnecting the technical knowledge developed during the experience with the managerial perspective of the Executive MBA: how to evaluate innovation, integrate it into organisations and turn technological potential into sustainable value.
