Artificial Intelligence in Italian companies: second edition of MIB Research Study

The survey explores how Italian companies are adopting artificial intelligence

Artificial Intelligence in Italian Companies
The survey explores how Italian companies are adopting artificial intelligence, focusing on AI maturity, business applications, skills, governance and organisational change.
Participants will receive free access to the AIRL assessment tool.

The second edition of MIB Trieste School of Management’s research study on the adoption of artificial intelligence in Italian companies has already collected more than 140 responses.

Initially launched within the MIB Alumni community, the survey is now open to managers and entrepreneurs from Italian companies across all industries.
The study is led by Francesco Venier, Grazia Garlatti Costa and Roberto Pugliese, members of MIB’s Core Faculty.
The first edition, conducted in 2024, gathered responses from 237 managers and entrepreneurs working in manufacturing, IT, services, healthcare and finance. The findings led to four academic publications, including the study that introduced the AI Readiness Level - AIRL.

Objectives

The research aims to understand how organisations’ AI maturity has evolved over the past two years: how many companies have moved from experimentation to the integration of artificial intelligence into business processes, which skills are still lacking, and how AI is affecting productivity, governance and the organisation of work.

AIRL

AIRL is an assessment tool developed to measure an organisation’s maturity in adopting artificial intelligence. The model evaluates three dimensions: technology, organisation and environment, through 45 indicators and provides an overall score on a scale from 1 to 9.
“Two years ago, generative AI was still largely experimental within Italian companies. Today, we want to understand what has really changed: how many organisations have moved from pilot projects to implementation, which capabilities are still missing, and how the relationship between people and intelligent systems is evolving,” explains Francesco Venier, Professor of Organizational Studies at the University of Trieste and Dean for Executive Education at MIB Trieste.

A survey open to all Italian Companies

The survey takes approximately ten minutes to complete and examines companies’ current level of AI adoption, their objectives and barriers, policies on ethics and privacy, digital skills and the perceived impact of artificial intelligence across different business functions.
All responses will be collected anonymously, analysed in aggregate form and used exclusively for academic research purposes.
Upon completion, participants will receive free access to AIRL and an initial assessment of their organisation’s AI maturity. The results position the company within one of four strategic stages identified by the model: Exploration, Experimentation, Focus and Transformation.
Each response will also contribute to the development of an updated benchmark on the adoption of artificial intelligence among Italian companies.
