Demographic Laboratory - DemoLab

DemoLab: a think tank for collecting and analyzing data on the structure and the dynamics of populations

About DemoLab

MIB DemoLab explores topics, which play a central role in social, economic and political development, such as demographic change, aging, fertility, population health, migration flows and redistribution of work.

It is a think tank capable of collecting and analyzing data, processing comparisons, producing reports on the structure and the dynamics of populations and acting as a qualified partner for private and public organizations, with the aim of supporting sustainable development.

The Institute is headed by its director Prof. Ermanno Pitacco.

Why DemoLab

The world is in the midst of a major demographic transition and the demographic trends have a big impact on the social issues and on the global economy.
Changing population age structures are shaping the trajectories of development in many countries, bringing opportunities and challenges both in an economic and social dimension.

The project is supported by Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Allianz Spa and Generali Italia.

DemoLab first focuses of research

In the first period of its activity, DemoLab will focus its research activities on the following topics:

Expected lifetime

In many developed countries, a progressive decrease of expected lifetime has been registered since 2016.

Expected lifetime and healthy life expectancy

The increase in expected lifetime, recently seen in many countries until 2016, was not accompanied by a parallel increase in expected life in healthy conditions, causing an increase in the expected number of years spent in conditions of partial or total disability.

Immigration

The significant migration flows from developing to developed countries determines a change in the age structure of the population as well as variations, still largely unknown, in the distribution of deaths by age.

Family size and dynamics

In many countries, low birth rates and changing social habits have caused a gradual reduction in the family size.
